2,523: Recruitment of Deans, Associate and Assistant Deans

Revised: April 2026

Academic deans shall be recruited by a search committee to be convened by the Executive Vice President & Provost in accordance with major unit bylaws.  The search committee shall include a majority of members from the major unit and the Executive Vice President & Provost may appoint others to the committee as needed, including students, faculty from other units, administrators, and representatives of the public.

The Executive Vice President & Provost will appoint a search committee chair, who is typically a serving dean from a different major unit.

  1. The Executive Vice President & Provost shall convene the first meeting of the committee and give the committee its charge, including the position description, and review procedures to be followed. The committee and Executive Vice President & Provost may consult at any time during the search and interview process.
  2. The search committee shall follow the University’s Faculty Search Rules (UAM 2,520).
  3. The search chair on behalf of the committee present an unranked list of three or more candidates to the Executive Vice President and Provost to move forward to campus interviews. The Executive Vice President & Provost can reject any nominee(s) and request additional candidate(s) as needed from the search chair and committee.
  4. When at least three candidates have been accepted by the Executive Vice President & Provost, their names shall be made known to the nominating groups and to the University community. Curriculum vitae or resumes for the candidate(s), along with the approved position description, shall be made available to the University community.
  5. Campus interviews may include but are not limited to meetings with representatives of the major unit of the candidate’s discipline, chief administrators, representatives of faculty, students, and classified employee groups with whom the candidate would work. There shall be a meeting with each candidate open to all members of the University community. Feedback from all interested parties is welcomed and solicited, compiled and provided to the Executive Vice President & Provost.
  6. The Executive Vice President & Provost will recommend a final candidate for hire to the President, who will determine whether to extend an offer or to seek additional candidates.
