This fall, students, faculty and staff at the 91·çÃùÄñ³ª School of Medicine (UNR Med) will return to a transformed Savitt Medical Library — one designed not only to support academic excellence but also to foster innovation, collaboration and student well-being.
The library’s latest upgrades include the creation of The Lab@Savitt, a newly outfitted technology suite that brings hands-on tools such as 3D printers, a 3D modeling workstation and AR/VR headsets into a centralized, accessible space. Designed to enhance the learning experience across disciplines, these tools are now available to all members of the UNR Med community.
“As medical education evolves, so must the environments in which students learn,” said Katie Jefferson, interim director of the Savitt Medical Library. “The Lab@Savitt is part of a broader commitment to providing students and faculty with innovative resources that support applied learning and creative problem-solving.”
The 3D printers — one filament-based for durable applications and one resin-based for high-detail models — allow users to bring complex designs to life, from anatomical structures to research prototypes. A dedicated 3D modeling workstation gives students full control over the design and printing process.

Together with the 3D printing suite, the addition of Meta Quest AR/VR headsets further expands opportunities for interactive, experiential learning. These headsets offer immersive clinical simulations and anatomical exploration, allowing users to interact with high-resolution models, practice procedures and engage with dynamic, hands-on content in a fully virtual environment.
As much as innovation shapes the future of learning, so does the environment in which that learning takes place.
So, in response to student feedback, the Savitt Library has also introduced sound-insulated individual study pods — private, quiet spaces for focused work. Each pod is equipped with power outlets, customizable lighting and airflow controls, offering students, faculty and staff a retreat from the busy academic environment.
“These study pods reflect our ongoing effort to respond to the needs of our learners,” Jefferson said. “We heard clearly from students that quiet space is essential, and we were determined to provide it in a thoughtful, student-centered way.”
Recognizing the importance of physical wellness and effective study strategies, the library has added stationary study bikes and under-desk pedal units. These allow students to incorporate light physical activity into their study sessions — whether reading, taking notes or reviewing lectures — helping to enhance focus and reduce stress amid the rigorous demands of medical training.

To further support self-directed learning, the library now offers access to the high-definition Anatomage Table — a state-of-the-art digital cadaver previously limited to classroom settings. This interactive, touch-screen tool includes detailed human and veterinary anatomical models, cross-sectional scans and built-in quizzes. It complements traditional anatomy instruction and provides flexible, hands-on learning at any time.
These enhancements at the Savitt Medical Library reflect UNR Med’s commitment to delivering high-quality, student-centered medical education rooted in innovation, inclusivity and community engagement.
The Savitt Medical Library has become a vital resource hub for students, faculty, and the broader health care community—an evolution made possible by the vision and dedication of individuals like Joan Zenan (March 3, 1940 - February 27, 2025). As the founder of the library, Joan is remembered for her relentless passion and leadership, shaping the mission and growth for decades, and ensuring the library would serve as a cornerstone of knowledge and support.
Her commitment extended far beyond her tenure as director; even in retirement, she championed the library’s progress and continued to nurture its development.
Joan’s remarkable career is marked by achievements such as planning and overseeing the completion of a new library building, earning the UNR Regents Award as Outstanding Faculty Member, and being elected a Fellow of the Medical Library Association. Her unwavering devotion culminated in a generous philanthropic gift that established the Joan Zenan Special Collections Endowment, securing resources for generations to come. Joan’s legacy resonates throughout the Savitt Medical Library, with her impact evident in every aspect of its service, and her memory cherished by all who benefit from her foresight and generosity
As the library continues to evolve, its growth will be guided by the needs of the UNR Med community — and the library remains committed to listening and responding to those needs.
