Scientific Core Service Awards

The Nevada INBRE and partners are seeking applicants for Scientific Core Service Awards to foster your research, publications and grants two times per year: spring and fall.

NV INBRE and funding partners offer Scientific Core Service Awards to help Nevada investigators access specialized research facilities, technologies, and expertise. The program is designed to support research projects by reducing barriers to the use of scientific core facilities and connecting investigators with experts who can help strengthen experimental design, data generation, analysis, and interpretation.

Our network continues to grow. The program now includes 10 participating core facilities at the 91·çÃùÄñ³ª and University of Nevada, Las Vegas, providing access to expertise in genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics and data science, advanced microscopy and imaging, electron microscopy and microanalysis, analytical chemistry, cellular and molecular analysis, and human neuroimaging.

Investigators are required to contact the appropriate core before submitting an application to discuss project feasibility, experimental design, available services, anticipated costs, and timelines.

Services can be requested from the following scientific cores:

    • Maximum Service Award: up to $7,000
    • The NBC provides comprehensive bioinformatics, biostatistics, and data science support. The team works with investigators from experimental design through analysis, visualization, interpretation, manuscript preparation, and grant development.
    • Available Services: RNA-seq, single-cell analysis, proteomics, multi-omics integration, microbiome analysis, whole-genome sequencing and other sequencing analyses, genome/transcriptome assembly and annotation, statistical analysis and data visualization, experimental design, research computing and workflow support, manuscript and grant support, training.

    • Maximum Service Award: up to $3,000
    • The NPC supports qualitative and quantitative characterization of proteins to investigate physiological pathways, molecular interactions, and regulatory signaling.
    • Available services: DIA and TMT proteomic quantification, protein sample preparation, protein identification, LC/MS-based proteomics.

    • Maximum Service Award: up to $3,000
    • The NGC provides sequencing technologies and expertise supporting genomic and transcriptomic research.
    • Available services: RNA sequencing, single-cell and single-nuclei sequencing, sanger sequencing, NextSeq sequencing, SeqStudio, TapeStation, Qubit and related genomic services.
  • , University of Nevada, Las Vegas
    • Maximum Service Award: up to $3,000
    • The UNLV Genomics Core Facility supports biomedical, biotechnology, and genomic research by providing access to essential instrumentation, technical expertise, and genomic services.
    • Available services: Sanger DNA sequencing, real-time PCR, flow cytometry, bioanalyzer RNA quality/RIN analysis, Qubit quantification of RNA, DNA, and protein.

    • Maximum Service Award: up to $5,000
    • The CAL provides spectrometry and chromatography instrumentation for a broad range of research and development applications.
    • Available services: Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS), Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), carbon and nitrogen analyses, microwave digestion and sample preparation.

    • Maximum Service Award: up to $3,000
    • The High Spatial and Temporal Resolution Imaging Core provides state-of-the-art microscopy for studying cellular structure, signaling pathways, and function in health and disease.
    • Available services: Confocal microscopy, multiphoton microscopy, STED super-resolution microscopy, STORM and single-molecule localization, TIRF, spinning disk, lattice light-sheet microscopy, live-cell and deep-tissue imaging.

    • Maximum Service Award: up to $3,000
    • The UNLV Confocal and Biological Imaging Core supports advanced biological imaging, including confocal, multiphoton, enhanced-resolution, transmitted-light, and fluorescence imaging.
    • Available services: Staff-assisted imaging, experimental design and sample-preparation consultation, instrument training, image-analysis guidance and quantitative imaging workflows.
  • , University of Nevada, Las Vegas [NEW – added Oct. 2026]
    • Maximum Service Award: up to $3,000
    • EMiL provides advanced electron microscopy and microanalysis capabilities, ranging from nanoscale imaging to quantitative elemental measurement and mapping.
    • Available services: Field-emission scanning electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and elemental mapping, electron backscatter diffraction, environmental SEM, scanning transmission electron microscopy, carbon and gold coating.
  • Cellular and Molecular Imaging (CMI) Core, 91·çÃùÄñ³ª [NEW – added April 2026]
    • Maximum Service Award: up to $5,000
    • The CMI Core provides advanced instrumentation and expertise supporting cellular, molecular, and whole-organism research, including advanced imaging, cell analysis, and molecular and protein analysis.
      Available services: High-resolution fluorescent imaging, cell analysis and sorting, deep-tissue imaging, label-free biomolecular analysis, integrated molecular analysis, experimental consultation and user training.
  • Neuroimaging Core, 91·çÃùÄñ³ª [NEW – added April 2026]
    • Maximum Service Award: up to $5,000
    • The Neuroimaging Core supports non-invasive human neuroscience research using advanced brain imaging and physiological measurement technologies, including fMRI, EEG, and eye tracking.
    • Available services: Functional MRI (fMRI), Electroencephalography (EEG), eye tracking, human neuroscience experimental design, data analysis and technical support.
  • Bridge to Research in AI and Neurocomputing (BRAIN) Core, 91·çÃùÄñ³ª
    • Maximum Service Award: up to $5,000
    • The BRAIN Core provides collaborative expertise in artificial intelligence, statistical modeling, advanced visualization, and computational workflows to support researchers in developing and applying innovative AI approaches.
    • Available services: AI and statistical model development, data visualization, computational workflow development and adaptation, data curation, proposal and application support, virtual, augmented, and mixed reality, AI and GPU-enabled computing access, GPU research computing consultation and onboarding.

Applicants may request services from one or multiple cores. No award will be issued for more than $7,000. Requested services might exceed the total award amount and will have to be paid by the applicant.

Researchers include undergraduate students, graduate students, residents, postdoctoral fellows, and faculty at a Nevada INBRE Partner Institution (CSN, DRI, GBC, NSU, TMCC, UNLV, UNR, WNC) needing scientific core services or support may apply.

Outreach institutions (CSN, GBC, NSU, TMCC, WNC) may apply at any time. Researchers from these locations may complete the . This application remains open and applications will be considered throughout the year.

Important information

  • You must consult with scientific core staff about your project to obtain a quote for requested services. The quote must be included in your application.
  • For INBRE funding, non-biomedical research projects will only be considered for applications from CSN, GBC, NSC, TMCC, and WNC with substantial student involvement, but priority will be given to biomedical related projects.
  • While NV INBRE and NIH funding primarily supports biomedical research, additional funding partners and resources allow the Scientific Core Service Award program to support a broader range of research areas. Researchers from all disciplines, including plant, environmental, and other non-biomedical fields, are encouraged to apply.
  • Funding priority will depend on funding source, e.g., one of Nevada INBRE’s missions is to foster the next generation of scientists and undergraduate student involvement is very important to us.
  • Nevada INBRE and other funding sources will need to be acknowledged and resulting presentations and manuscripts.
  • Awardees will be required to present their research at an annual seminar.
  • Awardees will be required to complete a report for Nevada INBRE for at least three years.
